History

Uplands Kindergarten was formed in 1970 and shifted to Somervell Church in 1976.  Originally it occupied three small rooms at the rear of the original church building on the ground floor, below the choir room and vestry.  A lean-to veranda with two toilets was attached to the back wall of the church and opened to the outside playground.
The playgro
und was a grassy slope enclosed by high fences and sheltered by a large pohutukawa tree, which was great for climbing and for providing bugs and snails suitable for science projects. Tucked away with just a small glimpse of Remuera Road, it was a haven for children and their parents.

The kindergarten continued to function in the old church building during construction of the new church and new kindergarten. The children were very interested in the demolition and removal of the hall and the original manse and then the construction of the new church.  In the fourth term of 1999 the kindergarten moved into the present day facilities.
